The CD8alphabeta heterodimer is a key cell surface coreceptor on cytotoxic T lymphocytes. It binds to MHC class I molecules on antigenpresenting cells, stabilizing the interaction between the Tcell receptor (TCR) and the peptideMHC complex. This binding is essential for Tcell activation, positive selection in the thymus, and the effector function of mature CD8+ T cells.
