Influenza is an acute infection of the respiratory tract caused by the Influenza virus, of which there are several different types. Influenza B is only known to infect humans and seals. Influenza infection in humans causes chills, fever, pharyngitis, muscle pain, headaches, coughing and weakness. The virus is transmitted through the air by coughs or sneezes or through saliva, nasal secretions, feces and blood. Infection may occur through direct contact with infected bodily fluid or contaminated surfaces. Influenza B viruses mutate slower than Influenza A, but fast enough that lasting immunity is not possible. The slower mutation rate and limited host range makes Influenza B less like to cause pandemics than Influenza A. Source: MDCK cells Strain: B/Hong Kong 5/72 Concentration: ~1mg/ml (dye binding assay) HA Titer: 27,307 Units/ml (Hemagglutination Endpoint Assay) Inactivation: Gamma radiation inactivation. Inactivated sample is inoculated onto MDCK cells alongside positive and negative controls and serially passaged after three days incubation. Result: No growth detected. Applications: Suitable for used in both IgG and IgM detection in assays which include EIA with polystyrene and latex solid phases.. Other applications not tested. Recommended Dilution: Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher. Storage and Stability: Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing and store at -70C. Aliquots are stable for 6 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Note: Freezing a buffered protein solution such as EMEM may selectively crystallize one buffering species, causing pH changes. EMEM (pH 7.0) is red in color (due to phenol red) at room temperature. Disodium Phosphate component crystallizes more readily than Monosodium Phosphate on freezing because the solubility of the disodium form is considerably lower than that of the monosodium form. Because of this, a solution that is buffered by sodium phosphate buffer at pH 7.0 at room temperature (and is red in color) may experience a pH drop during freezing and become orange or yellow. On thawing the material will be red in color because disodium salt will be re-solubilized and pH will be 7.0
